Automotive Technician Opportunities Exist If You Have the Right Training

In the old days, almost anyone could fix a car. You just popped the hood and everything was right there: the spark plugs, belts, radiator, oil pump, and other engine components were in plain sight. Cars were simple and easy to repair, and you could spend a few hours on a Saturday afternoon getting the old Chevy Camaro to purr like a kitten (or roar like a lion, if that was your preference).

Not now! Today’s vehicles have computers and sophisticated power systems including flex-fuels and gas-electric hybrids. Open the hood and you might not see much that the layman would recognize. Not many people can fix their own cars these days because vehicles are just too complex. They have to bring their car to a qualified technician.

Auto service technicians must have a broad knowledge of the design and interaction of vehicles’ increasingly complex components. They must be able to work with both old-fashioned hand tools and advanced electronic diagnostic equipment. They must be able to quickly learn new technologies and keep up with the rapid rate of change in the auto industry.

Good Career Prospects

If you are a qualified auto, truck, or diesel technician, you may have good career prospects. According to the U.S. Government Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (USBLS), from 2008 through 2018 automotive service technician and mechanic job opportunities are expected to be good for those who have post-secondary school automotive training.

Total job openings should increase because of overall employment growth, and because many skilled technicians are expected to retire. Job opportunities for auto technicians and mechanics are expected to be very good for those who complete post-secondary automotive training programs and who earn ASE certification.

Get the Right Training

But you can’t just walk into a career as an auto service technician. Getting the right training can be important. Even for entry-level jobs, certification from the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) has become a standard credential for automotive service technicians. To prepare for certification, many training authorities recommend that students complete a formal training program in high school or in a post-secondary vocational school or community college.

You may want to start out with a service specialty. Certification can be obtained in eight different areas of automotive service, including engine repair, suspension and steering, brake systems, electrical systems, and heating and air-conditioning. Once you’ve launched your career, you may find that employers often send their technicians to manufacturer-sponsored technician training programs to improve or maintain their skills. Sometimes technicians focus on one brand of automobile or truck. Manufacturers also send experts to visit repair shops to provide brand-specific training.

How to Find an Automotive Training School

Here’s how to get started. Log onto a reputable college directory website such as the one below. By using your ZIP code, you’ll be able to get free information about automotive training schools in your area. Compare schools and find out which ones offer flexible schedules, financial aid for those who qualify, manufacturer sponsorship, and career guidance services. Then contact the schools that work for you. In just a few minutes you could be on your way to training for a rewarding career as an automotive technician.

Mobile Oil Change Companies – How Much Should You Be Paying Your Automotive Technicians?

Right now all small businesses are really watching their costs and they are also watching their receivables and cash flow. They have to. If they don’t they’ll be out of business, because a recession makes life tough on all small businesses. What about the mobile oil change business, it must be doing good because people have to change their oil right?

Well, people are supposed to change their oil, but when they don’t have enough money to buy food, pay the bills, or they are getting behind on their rent or mortgage payments, they often allow their vehicles to go past the proper interval for oil changing. The reality is every small business is affected by the recession, and nothing, or that is to say no small business is completely immune, or recession proof.

Not long ago, a mobile auto service business entrepreneur went to one of our websites, noticed that we were in the mobile automotive sector, and asked me about employee pay. He stated;

“I pay only $8 hr at this time. I am thinking I need to give some type of incentive to make them work even harder because of course they are not working as hard as me. Is there some type of solution there. I have enough work to keep me really busy.”

Very good question isn’t it? Sure it is, and don’t forget he asks this question in the middle of a recession right, so there are plenty of people who want the job, so let’s take his question to mean; “What incentive Might I Use?” That is to say; “What can I do to improve my employees’ efficiency to get them to work harder?”

Now then, we know the question, the second set of questions are the right questions, even if the entrepreneur asks; “how can I MAKE my employees work as hard as me?” The reality is you can’t make anyone do anything, if you MAKE them do it, you are not an employer you are running a prison, or you are a slave driver, and in this day and age that definitely will not fly, see that point.

Luckily, for this individual in the mobile oil change industry there have been many car dealerships which have lost their franchise license from their parent companies of Chrysler or General Motors. That means there are a lot of automotive technicians that are out of work and will work fairly inexpensively. However, even Jiffy Lube pays more than eight dollars an hour, as well as the Wal-Mart supercenters which also now do oil changes (only $12.99 can you believe it?).

Most mobile oil change companies service fleets, and if you are doing fleets one thing you can do is give incentive pay. In other words, give those employees a little stipend for each vehicle they complete, and you will note that they go faster, and don’t lollygag. Indeed, hope this advice will sink in, and that you will think on it.

Consumers Benefit From Automotive Technician Certification

Perhaps years ago any backyard auto mechanic would do, after all cars were simpler then, less complex and anyone with a good mechanical aptitude, a know how of how the engine works and a set of tools and the skill set to use them could fix a small problem or even a big one. Today, that has all changed. With today’s high tech vehicles, the margin for error is dramatically less and the cost of a mistake is significantly more, so it makes financial sense to protect your investment in your vehicle through maintenance and service performed by qualified professionals.

Contrary to popular belief automotive trade is not a compulsory trade in many parts of North America – it certainly is not in British Columbia. This means that anyone can open and run an auto repair shop without having a single certified automotive technician on staff.

While they may be the exception to the rule, unlicensed mechanics are employed throughout the continent, often in small one and two man shops or in specialty shops such as radiator repairs, used auto parts yards, and, belief it or not, at brake and wheel alignment shops!

One way to differentiate between automotive is to look for or ask to see their certificates. In Canada, we have the Red Seal of licensing Automotive Technicians. This certificate will be tan in color and will have a red seal in the top right and bottom left corners and a Provincial logo in the center. This will not be a certificate from a trade school, college or auto parts company. Once a technician writes and passes the Red Seal exam he is certified for life.

Another certification body exists and it is called ASE. ASE Certificates can be identified by a blue gear shaped logo with the letters ASE in it. The ASE is an equal standard but has two advantages to it: it requires re-certification every five years and it is voluntary therefore, those techs that choose to write the exam show a strong commitment to their profession that is above and beyond the average and that they are commitment to keeping up with the changes in technology. Further, employers who support their technicians’ efforts to become certified can be counted on to be concerned about other aspects of their business.

Another thing about modern vehicles that bears discussion is how almost every system of the car is inter-connected with another system. This fact is often overlooked by those working in the above mentioned specialty shops. The brakes on the car are connected to traction control, cruise control, stability control, and other systems of the car. The specialist may have been repairing brakes for 30 years but automotive technology has changed more than just a little over that time and a repair that seems simple can often have complex side effects if performed incorrectly.

In closing there is a reason for certification and most established auto repair shops do hire certified staff and guaranteed, it will pay you back in the long run to patronize a professional repair facility.

Give Your Automotive Technician Some Respect

There is a dark cloud that seems to hang over the automotive repair industry. It is unfortunate that there is still a large part of the general public that thinks every repair shop is out to get them and that their expertise is over rated. Even in the industry itself, the stigma is played upon. Competitors accuse others of wrong doing to make themselves look good, and in the end are simply hurting themselves. There are automotive self help web sites that bash the professional technician.

Let’s spread a little subjective light on the subject. Run a search on the internet though any search engine for home dental work. It is not very likely the results you yield will give you step by step instructions for filling a cavity or performing a root canal in your kitchen. You will not find dental tools at the local “Dental Zone”. These things don’t exist because you would only have a trained professional work on your teeth. The tools available to them are not for general public use. The same is true for automotive repair, but the general public seems to think otherwise.

Professional automotive technicians spend a lot of money on tools that are not found at the local auto store. A tech may spend $2500 every year in tools for his or her entire career. That is a personal expense so that they can perform repairs effectively and efficiently. They make that investment out of pocket so that they can be the best at what they do. The tools that they use to repair vehicles is constantly being updated and adapted to the technology that goes into vehicles. These technicians spend their money on tools to fix cars, and the companies that employ them spend money to train them on the new technologies. I am pretty sure that dentists are spending a good amount of money on new equipment and have seminars to stay current on advances in dentistry. And this is not the only similarity.

The work that your technician does also has some pretty serious impact. Just as a dentist that does a procedure incorrectly and causes injury, a technician not performing his repairs correctly can cause injury. It is important for both of these professionals to know what they are doing. If they do not, people get hurt, or on a lesser note, miss work, lose money, and are overall inconvenienced. There are many similarities to the importance, training, and equipment that go into these two professions, but what about the differences?

There are many differences. Let’s start out with the fact that the technician has to work in environments that are hot, cold, dirty, and sometimes pretty close to unbearable. I ask how many of us would like to stand under a vehicle with a hot engine, arms straight up in the air for 30 minutes at a time in a shop that’s 90 degrees? Or how would you like to go and repair an ignition problem when its 10 degrees, and have to do it outside because the vehicle cannot be towed in to the shop? The rest of the day you can spend bent over burning and cutting your hands while you use that new $300 tool you paid for.

When you go to the dentist for a routine check up, you don’t argue after being checked that “he just looked at my teeth” and since he didn’t do anything you should not pay. But everyday in automotive repair shops, customers argue that exact point. The dentist charges for his time as a professional. He charges for the chair you sat in and the tools he used to look at your teeth. He charges for the schooling and experience that make him qualified in his profession. The automotive repair shop does the same, only customers feel that they can argue the point.

It seems that there a are a whole lot of people who know everything there is to know about car repair and the business. Yet with all of their automotive knowledge, they choose a different profession. Maybe it’s the long hours, the hard working conditions, the constant learning, or serious personal investment that it take to be an professional automotive technician, but I think it might also be that they don’t know what they’re talking about.

There are many repairs that the mechanically inclined “back yard mechanic” can perform. The simple repairs are fine to do yourself with the right reference material and general tools. When it comes to diagnosing vehicles with problems and repairing complicated systems that require special tools, the money you pay for that repair is justified, well justified. So give your technicians the respect that they deserve for performing a professional service that most of the public is not even capable of doing, even if they invest $10,000 in tools to get the job done.

Know the Matters and Get the Best Benefits From Automotive Batteries

Automobiles need batteries to get electric energy and for this purpose, automotive batteries were invented. These batteries are rechargeable and small in size, so that they can be set up in automobiles very easily. Especially, it is regarded as an automotive battery. The work of an Starting, Lightning and Ignition is to supply energy to the starter motor for an automobile.

Six galvanic cells are used to make these batteries and they are usually lead acid type. At full charge, an automotive battery provides 12.6 volts. One single Starting, Lightning and Ignition is enough for a small vehicle. But heavy vehicles like highway trucks, tractors etc. that have diesel engines use more than one batteries. These batteries are recyclable, for this reason, they are environment friendly too. And through this process, every year a huge number of batteries are produced. There are usually four types of automotive batteries. They are described below shortly:

• Flooded Cell Type: These types of automotive batteries are inexpensive and working for long time period. But, they require a lot of maintenance and care. But, they can be leaked or spilled at any moment.

• Valve Regulated Lead Acid: They are the alternatives of Flooded Cell type batteries and more expensive than Flooded Cell Type Batteries. These batteries are also known as “sealed” batteries. You cannot repair these batteries and maintain them neither. Hydrometer cannot be used to measure the charge of these batteries and you cannot replenish the electrolyte too. These batteries are maintenance free and are usually used to stay safe from any kind of leakage.

• Shallow Cycle: To start an automobile engine, a large burst of power is needed. And for this purpose, Shallow Cycle batteries are really useful. They can produce a strong power when an engine starts. After that, they are charged by the engine driven charging system. They contain higher specific gravity electrolyte so that the internal resistance can be reduced. Many thin separated plates are used to make these batteries.

• Deep Cycle: These types of batteries are made to provide continuous power for a long period of time. Especially, the small vehicles such as small boats, recreational vehicles, golf cart etc. use these types of batteries. To store energy from wind turbine or photovoltaic array, they are used too.

To use your battery for a long period of time, you have to follow some certain rules. Car batteries that use lead antimony plates may need water regularly. Specialists recommend using distilled water in a particular level. But, nowadays, most of the batteries do not require this watering. Always try to use a charging method that is safe. The most popular charging method is Trickle Charging. Do not over charge your or keep for a long time on charging. This may reduce your product lifetime. And even they can be dangerous. You should also be careful about storage and changing. And such, you can get the best service from these batteries. These processes are also useful for your own safety.

Eastman Industries Ltd. one of the leading auto battery manufacturers in India. Eastman offers a wide range of high quality automotive batteries, Vrla battery manufacturers, inverter and motorcycle batteries of JIS and DIN series.

Auto Recycler for Your Damaged Car

Motor vehicles are the most recycled products because of the availability of auto recyclers. Auto recycling entails stripping a vehicle off its reusable parts and then crushing the remaining body. The reusable parts are sold and the crushed portion is recycled by a scrap processor.

Why recycle?

This is done to reduce wastage. Numerous cars are written off as scrap every year. It makes sense to remove the parts that can be used and reuse them. This is not only beneficial for the environment but also makes auto parts available at affordable prices to consumers. In fact, the car manufacturers bear recycling in mind while manufacturing cars. Hence, they provide parts that are long-lasting.

As is apparent, an auto recycler works on the principle of conserving the environment. The three Rs of environment conservation are Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.
Reduce:

This implies using fewer natural resources for conserving the environment. If auto parts are reused, then a lesser quantity needs to be manufactured. If manufacturing reduces then the natural resources used are reduced.

Reuse:

Reusing has a positive impact on the environment. Hence, auto parts that are removed and sold enable reducing the landfill.

Recycle:

Recycling auto parts is the basic function of a recycler. Recycling helps conserve the environment as it reduces landfill and depletion of the environment for creating new parts.

Benefits of auto recyclers:

Good for the earth:

• Recycling is beneficial for the earth because of the following reasons:
• Reduces dangerous toxins from being released into our ground and water.
• It prevents the use of valuable landfill.
• It helps preserve the natural resources as it reduces the need for manufacturing new parts.

Good for your wallet

Recycled parts are available at nearly half the price as the original. Hence you save a good amount by purchasing them.

Good for your vehicle

The recycled parts are original and genuine made as per the original manufacturer’s specifications. In fact, many sellers of recycled parts even provide a warranty for them.

Hence, we see that auto recyclers, recycle End-of-life vehicles and protect water, air, and soil from harmful material contained in them.

So, if you have an end of life car, why sit around with it? Anyway, damaged cars do not have a book value so establishing a price for it will be difficult. Sell it to an auto recycler and earn cash in exchange! You will be doing your bit for the environment as well!

Economize the Maintenance of Your Car by Using Recycled Parts

Auto recycling is one of the most widespread recycling industries globally. Auto parts are recycled from end-of-life cars. Damaged and old cars have usually have no takers. Hence, instead of just abandoning them, it makes sense to recycle their parts.

How are cars recycled?

• Damaged cars are bought by auto wreckers or recyclers. They are taken to auto recyclers which are large, open spaces for such cars.
• Over here, the car is inspected to check whether it can be repaired and reused or it is a write-off.
• In most cases, the car cannot be reused. Hence, the next step is to recycle it.
• Recycling entails removal of usable parts and their sale. This is followed by disposal of the parts that cannot be reused.
• Most of the parts such as the car stereo, windshield, wipers, mirrors, headlights, taillights, etc. if not damaged are sold in the market.
• Parts such as battery are removed and used to manufacture new batteries.
• Tires are used to make pavement bases for new roads.
• Wheels are removed and sold as metal scrap.
• If the glass is damaged, it is recycled to make porcelain, jewelry, beads, tiles, etc.
• After removal of all the parts and the various oils and fluids. The next step is the disposal of those fluids in a manner so that they do not affect the environment.
• Finally, the metallic portion of the car is left. This is crushed so as to reduce its size and then it is sold to a shredder.
• Most parts of the car are intact and can be reused. Many auto recyclers get the damaged parts restored so that they can be sold.

Every car needs spare parts for maintenance at some stage or the other.

Buying recycled parts is better than buying the original because:

1. These parts are available at nearly half the price of the original.
2. Since they have been removed from original cars, they provide a good fit.
3. These parts are genuine.
4. Many sellers of used parts provide a warranty for their products.
5. Recycling car parts helps in conserving the environment. This is because it reduces the need to manufacture new parts; since most parts are reused, the landfill is reduced; The pollutants are disposed of. By using these parts, you can also contribute towards conservation.

Hence, we see that using recycled car parts is not only beneficial to us but also works for the bigger cause of saving the planet.

Whether you need to buy or sell used car parts, you can do it with the help of Parts Locator, a leading auto parts resource in Australia. To know more visit here.

Benefits of Recycling a Car

When a car is wrecked or damaged, what do you do with it?

Your options are repairing it and reusing it. Many a time this is not possible. In such cases, you can sell your car to an auto-dismantler. An auto-dismantler recycles the car for repairing other cars, selling used parts, etc.

An auto-dismantler removes all the functional and non-functional parts from a car. It also removes various fluids. The metallic portion that remains is crushed into a small piece and shred into pieces.

Recycling of wrecked cars has become a lucrative business option because the number of users of recycled car parts has increased.

Reasons for users of recycled car parts increasing:

• They are nearly half the price when compared to new parts.
• Manufacturers of car parts make these parts so that they are durable. This ensures that these parts last even after the car reaches its end-of-life.
• Used car parts have a good fit as they have been detached from original vehicles.
• Used car parts market caters to a wide range of cars.
• For cars whose models have been discontinued, the only option to look for spare parts is used car market.
• Vintage cars can find their spares in the used car market.

Besides these benefits, an auto-dismantler benefits the environment also. Imagine if cars were not dismantled and reduced in size, how much of waste we would generate? Cars also contain various hazardous and non-hazardous fluids which can impact the environment adversely.

Let us see what service an auto-dismantler provides to the environment:

1. Recycling of parts:

Various parts are removed from the car. Those that are intact are sold ‘as is’ in the market. Those that can be repaired are restored and sold. Others that cannot be reused as functional parts are used in other applications. This reduces wastage and saves landfill. It also conserves our natural resources by reducing the need to manufacture new parts.

2. Recycling fluids:

A car contains many fluids such as coolant, brake fluid, transmission fluid, etc. Some of these fluids are recycled and can be reused. While some other fluids can be converted into fuels, etc. and reused. This is beneficial to the environment because some of these fluids contain harmful chemicals. If they are released into the earth, they can be detrimental to the health of animals, aquatic creatures, and humans. Some fluids are inflammable and so cannot be released into the environment.

3. Recycling Steel:

Steel is required for a variety of applications. But its manufacture uses up valuable natural resources. Therefore, recycling steel reduces the need to manufacture fresh steel positively impacting the environment.

Hence, we see that dismantling and recycling a car is beneficial in numerous ways.

Recycling auto parts has become very popular in recent times.Parts Locator is a source through which you can buy and sell used car parts. To know more visit here.
